This morning’s theme was “the spirt is willing, but the body is weak.”

I woke up ahead of my alarm, and the body was like “oh, man, let’s just sleep in. Isn’t this bed nice and warm.” But once my mind was awake, it wouldn’t let the body rest. So, I got up, got dressed, and headed to gym. The body wanted me to go easy and do a simple warm up and a weight training routine. But once on the treadmill, the mind had a different idea – do incline training. Every 1/2 mile I increased the incline (0.5-> 1.0-> 1.5-> 2.0) and pace (5.5-> 5.7-> 5.8-> 6.0).

It’s been 12 hours since I did my last run, so of course I get up and head to the gym. Since I’ll be running every 10 -12 hours for the relay, I might as well try running every 10 – 12 hours. Didn’t do too bad for an early morning effort. I am finding that I am bit slower with these morning workouts. The muscles hadn’t had the day to loosen up and the body’s fuel is low.

I wasn’t sure if I was going to run today. I overslept this morning and missed my gym time. I was going to do the treadmill. I took yesterday off as the run up the hill was a killer. Anyway, by the end of the day I felt that i should try to get some miles in. So, I did my local trail with the goal of doing 3 miles. I ended up with over 4 miles and was pleasantly surprised that I was able to manage an overall pace of under 10 min/mi.

The most challenging part of this run, besides the length, was that it had steep elevation gains around mile 3.6. Nothing like running for 3.6 miles and then hitting a 250 feet elevation in under a mile. The good thing was that even with all the elevation gain I was able to keep my pace up.

This was a beautiful run on my last full day in Maui. This run took me along a paved beach trail in south Maui. Unfortunately, the path is fairly narrow and crowded as it goes in front/through the luxury resorts in Wailea. But is was one of my best runs, timing wise, so far.
